Wetherhold back at point
Until last season, Dave Wetherhold played point guard. It was a process that began in fifth grade and continued through his junior year.
Last season, Wetherhold moved to shooting guard alongside point guard Brandon Purrone. This time around, it was a move that he gradually became accustomed.
This past summer with Purrone graduating, Wetherhold took the first steps toward his senior season with the Roughies boys' basketball program when he moved back to the point, a position he will officially begin when practice began on Monday.
"Last season, I was running around screens to get open," he said. "Now, I have been getting used to running the offense again and also getting to the basket off the dribble. I also have been working on handling the ball much more than I did last year."
However, it is a role Wetherhold relishes.
"I do like being a vocal leader," stressed Wetherhold, who also has played football and soccer in the Roughies' programs. "I have been a leader in all the sports that I have played. Over the years, I have always wanted to be a leader."
Head coach Eric Snyder likes what he sees from his floor general.
"Davey (Wetherhold) is a player who is always working and coming at you," said Snyder. "He had a good summer and we expect him to be solid at the point for us. He has made the adjustment and he is one of the hardest working kids out there."
Wetherhold has already thrust his leadership role into action, as he sees the team having the ability to head back into the league playoffs and district play.
"We always didn't have all our guys for games during the summer because of other commitments," he said. "But when we did, we were a tough team to beat. We have more depth this season than I have seen in the past few years. We'll have around 10 guys who can come into a game and we won't miss a beat. It is a deep and talented team.
"We also build good chemistry during the summer and we all seemed to click in a hurry."
Wetherhold hasn't decided on a college to attend next year, but he plans to pursue a career in business management. When he isn't playing sports, he certainly spends time watching them.
"I really don't do too much other than play or watch sports," he said. "I either watch the NBA or movies. There really aren't a lot of different things going on with me besides sports."
The Roughies, though, are confident Wetherhold can make plenty of things happen on the court this winter.
