Phantoms fight off 6-on-3 for victory
Fans at the Phantoms' 3-2 win over Toronto last weekend saw something that doesn't happen very often in hockey and it turned out to be quite a turn of events.
With Lehigh Valley up 3-2 and 2:30 left in the game, Oliver Lauridsen was called for delay of game and went off the ice for two-minutes, giving the Marlies a power play. Looking to seize the opportunity, Toronto coach Gord Dineen pulled goalie Christopher Gibson to give his team a five-on-three advantage. Just 33-seconds later, Scott Laughton was called for hooking and sent to join Lauridsen in the sin bin as Toronto went on a six-on-three advantage.
It seemed almost certain that the Phantoms (6-6-1) wouldn't be able to hold off the Marlies, but the combination of Robert Hagg, Brandon Manning, Darrell Powe and goalie Rob Zepp played the situation perfectly to preserve the win.
The biggest play came from Hagg, when Zepp was on the far post and Hagg had to man the other side of the goal, knocking away a shot on the empty side of the net.
"Everybody has to chip in when it's six-on-three," said Zepp. "You don't see that very often and obviously, we're going to give up some shots and I need to make some saves, but the guys did a good job of getting in lanes, getting their sticks in lanes and blocking shots. Robert Hagg made a huge save right before the end, so everybody contributed to that."
Zepp, 33, is a veteran goalie, but doesn't remember ever facing a six-on-three in his career. The situation is so rare, it's not even something that teams draw up any plan for and certainly don't spend time practicing. Phantoms coach Terry Murray even questioned whether you want to pull your goalie in that situation.
"We don't practice six-on-three, we practice five-on-three, but you know what? Do you want to pull your goaltender at that time or do you want to stay at five? I don't know anybody ever that's ever practiced six-on-three and now, there's a guy stuck in the way. Where does he go? What does he do?" asked Murray rhetorically.
When asked, jokingly, if he might start practicing six-on-threes, Murray was definite with his response.
"Just on the power-play side of it. We're not going to be practicing any more of that six-on-three on the PK," said Murray with a laugh. "We can't be taking those types of penalties."
