Jordan Road to be improved

The section of Jordan Road between Kernsville Road and Haasadahl Road will be closed for about two weeks for reconstruction and improvements on the hilly, wooded area alongside the stream.

South Whitehall Director of Public Works Bob Ibach explained the project at the Nov. 5 commissioners' meeting.

He said the road is sliding. Workers will excavate down and install geo grids, resembling honeycombs.

The grids will be filled with material to provide a solid base for the road that will be laid on top.

The bid for the project was awarded to Grace Industries Inc. at a cost of $289,100.

The road will be closed and detours will be necessary while the work is in progress.

"We're hoping to have this done before winter sets in," Ibach said. "Hopefully, this will be the end of the Jordan Road problem."

In other business, the board voted to delete a section of township code enacted in 2010 placing restrictions on commissioners.

Township Solicitor Chris McLean explained the result of removing restrictions.

"Now there can be more of an open, direct line of communication between commissioners and certain members of the staff– employees in administrative services," McLean said.

Resident Bob Schantz asked whether the independent study of Wehr's Dam has been undertaken by the consultant hired by South Whitehall.

Director of Administration Howard Kutzler said the township's consultant is waiting for the KCI Technologies study currently being conducted through funding obtained by the Wildlands Conservancy.

Structural engineer Dan Honig, who specializes in dams and geo-technical issues, will review the KCI report for the township.

Leroy Schmidt, who on his own accumulated 4,700 signatures in favor of saving Wehr's Dam, commented on his desire to save history.

"People of the township have memories that should not be tossed aside," Schmidt said. "Let's save the dam for young people to make memories of their own.

"I'm at the dam every day the weather's good. We're going to stick with it until we win."
