Commissioners to look into webcasting meetings

What began at the Nov. 10 Whitehall Township Board of Commissioners meeting as a proposal to expand the taping of board, workshop, planning commission and zoning meetings turned into a webcasting proposal.

The board unanimously decided to further look into the costs and procedures to implement the idea.

Commissioner Gerard Palagonia asked his colleagues to expand on covering commissioners meetings.

"Personally, I think that is the way to go," Mayor Edward D. Hozza Jr. said. "Several municipalities have it."

According to Hozza, Saucon Valley School District, Upper Macungie Township, State College and Lehigh County offer webcasting.

"Let's think about it. We all have to behave ourselves," Palagonia said.

He said he is not opposed to webcasting the meetings.

"I make the motion," Palagonia said.

The motion was then withdrawn because the commissioners decided more time is needed to research the matter.

"It's not very expensive, but it's going to cost you money," Commissioner Thomas Slonaker said.

There was no timetable provided as to when the issue will be placed on the agenda for further discussion or a vote.

In September 2013 the commissioners questioned the use of a video recorder located at the back of the meeting room.

The township solicitor, acting on the commissioners request to determine its legality, ruled it was legal and in accordance with the Open Meetings Act.

Hozza did not reinstall the video recorder at subsequent meetings.
