State: Engvall glad to be back
Comedian Bill Engvall brings his trademark "blue-collar comedy" to two shows, 5 and 8 p.m. Nov. 22, State Theatre Center for the Arts, 453 Northampton St., Easton.
Engvall is well-known for his "Here's your Sign" comedy catch phrase and for his performances with the successful "Blue Collar Comedy Tour" with fellow comedians Jeff Foxworthy, Larry The Cable Guy and Ron White. He won new fans with his popular stint on "Dancing with the Stars" on ABC television in 2013.
Engvall has always enjoyed making people laugh. "I wasn't a jock growing up," he says in a phone interview. "I learned to make friends by being funny. But I didn't know you could make a living at it."
He credits his success with creating clean and relate-able comedy. "I talk about being a Dad, about being a husband and a family man. These are things lots of people can relate to."
The idea for "Here's your Sign" came from a conversation with his wife about his annoyance with people doing foolish things. He and his wife came up with an idea for a bit about giving those people a sign to hold that stated: "I'm stupid."
"It was the 'Where's the beef?' of the 1990's. Young comics have asked me 'How do you come up with a catch phrase?' The answer is 'You don't.' The audience dictates that. The audience responds to something and grabs onto it."
Engvall loves performing on stage. "I love what I do. I love being on stage and getting to see people and places I never would have seen before. It does not go unappreciated."
Engvall is also grateful for the opportunity to perform at the State Theatre. "The State is such a great place. I love the theater. It's beautiful."
He also makes a point to explore the surrounding area if he has time. "I like to walk around downtown and in the square."
For his State Theatre performance, Engvall will talk about getting older, "Dancing with the Stars" and "general life stuff.
"Come on out and see the show. It's a good, clean performance that anyone can watch. We will have a great time."
