Twp. to review pool figures

In 2015 Whitehall Township officials will take a good look at the attendance records for its three pools.

The review very well could determine what direction, if any, the township takes in 2016 regarding the operation of the municipal pools, which include the Jefferson Pool in Fullerton, Parkview Pool in Hokendauqua and Cementon Pool at Cementon Park.

Mayor Edward D. Hozza Jr. at the Oct. 29 budget hearing said monitoring attendance at the pools will help determine whether public support is declining.

The administration may recommend one of the pools be converted into a water spray park, Hozza said. The pool would be filled and water would be sprayed continuously. Water spray facilities have been trending at private and municipal parks.

"We would not need lifeguards," Hozza said.

Hozza does not anticipate the need for state grant funding for such a project.

Municipal pool attendance has been dropping for some time in the region because residents have their own pools or utilize pool parks such as Dorney Park's Wildwater Kingdom.

The township is allocating $69,700 for lifeguards and $30,000 for six pool managers in 2015.
