Whitehall Township wants to take a bite out of blight in some areas of the township.
Howard Lieberman, executive director of the Whitehall Township Industrial Commercial Development Authority, recommended at the Oct. 30 board of commissioners budget hearing the township begin by setting up a special fund and allocating $10,000 to deal with abandoned structures.
"We could seize the property by eminent domain," Lieberman suggested.
He said the properties could then be resold to responsible buyers with the funds going into a line item in the budget to become a revolving account. Lieberman also said the $10,000 allocation, if approved, would grow each year.
Board President Linda Snyder said the board wholly supports such an endeavor.
The administration will review the proposed 2015 budget to determine if such an allocation could be provided.
"Right now, we have no leverage. We start with one small property ... send a message," Commissioner Dennis Hower said.
Commissioner Phillips Armstrong added his support to the possible initiative.
"I think we have to go forward," Snyder said.
