Shiloh Sziy stays busy
Shiloh Sziy arguably is one of the most busiest athletes at Catasauqua. Along with playing basketball, field hockey, and softball, Sziy also manages to maintain her status as a cheerleader as well as being active in a number of school-related activities.
However, she wouldn't want it any other way.
"I like to stay busy," said Sziy, who is a senior. "At times, it can be very trying. I do manage to have some time off during the seasons. But I know I want to keep going and not just sitting on the couch."
She recently was named an honorable mention Colonial League all-star choice on defense in field hockey. Teammate forward Quinn Bachman was a first-team selection.
"We have been playing well and we have had a number of people stepping up this season," said Sziy. "We are all working and playing well together. We have had points all season where our offense has been stronger in our defense and vice versa.
"We have had our ups and downs, but we did come together as a team."
Sziy cited a 4-1 defeat to Moravian Academy early in the season as a turning point.
"We really came together as a team at that point," she said. "We went on to win some games, and we all come together. Since then, we have been playing better."
Her coach has appreciated her leadership and effort.
"Shiloh is a real leader on this team," said head coach Carrie Saul. "She works extremely hard and has really become a better player over the years. She is a solid defensive player and does all of the little things out there."
"Shiloh is the type of player who will do anything you ask of her," added Roughies' head softball coach Bobby Thomas. "She can make this happen as she is very aggressive."
Along with playing three sports and being a cheerleader, Sziy also has experienced a range of emotions from a struggling basketball program to an elevating softball program. Sziy will be one of two team captains for new head girls' basketball coach Ed Seidick this winter.
"It can be frustrating in basketball because we haven't won," said Sziy. "But we all know we're doing the right things. In softball, we have had much success and there are always high emotions and expectations."
Besides athletics, Sziy is student council president, president of Power of 10, treasurer of SADD, and a peer mentor as well as being a member of the school newspaper, Varsity C, and German Club.
Her family roots in sports run deep. Brother Rhaine graduated last year and is a current member of the wrestling team at Worcester Polytechnical Institute. Her father, Mike, has been a fixture over the years in the Catasauqua football scene.
After Catasauqua, Sziy plans to pursue a nursing degree, and she would like to continue her athletic career in some capacity. Ironically, it may be the demanding schedule of her nursing major that can prevent her from an athletic career.
"I know nursing is a difficult major and it will need a lot of time," she said. "I have to see how everything will go. If I can, I will try. I know I have to keep busy."
In keeping in turn, Sziy should be expected to have a full plate.
