Football team takes road trip to face Del Val

After winning at Stroudsburg in the quarterfinals last weekend, the Parkland football team will once again hit the road this Friday night, when the Trojans take on Delaware Valley in the Districts 2-11 Subregional tournament.

"These kids just love playing football and they want to continue playing," said Parkland head coach Jim Morgans. "I like being able to play against teams that we haven't played yet, it's exciting because there's that sense of mystery and neither team knows much about each other."

Although these two teams have not seen each other this year, they are no stranger to one another. The two met twice two years ago, once on opening weekend and again in the district final. Parkland went 1-1, winning the one that mattered most. Parkland also defeated Del Val in the 2013 season opener.

"They are a very well-coached team," said Morgans. "Coach [Keith] Olsommer played at Penn State, so he knows a lot about football. They do things the right way.

"They like to run the football a lot. They'll put their two good running backs out as a stretch play to the outside. And they have a tight end that is going to Delaware. Defensively they are strong up front, and a bit young in the secondary. They're 11-1 and only lost by a point to a team from Florida, so it's going to be a tough game."

Parkland (10-2) would like to have another overall offensive performance like it did last weekend against Stroudsburg.

Tailbacks Unique Divine and Nolan Ridgway each had rushing touchdowns, and four different receivers caught four passes each, including Kenny Yeboah, who hauled in a 25-yard touchdown. Jarey Elder, Nicholas Zambelli and Gabe Clark were the other three.

But defensively is where it all starts for the Trojans. The unit was stout once again against the Mounties, and will be put to the test at least one more time this Friday night in Milford.

"Our defense shut them down," said Morgans. "They are the best defense in the league in my opinion. We'll lean on our defense as we always do, then we'll get good opportunities with our offense."

A win and Parkland will have the opportunity to play for its third straight district championship.
