Council refuses to remove signs

The Borough of Northampton's street sweeping program is under fire.

At the Nov. 6 meeting, council requested signs for the ban on vehicle parking for street sweeping be removed on the lower end of Main Street, in the 700-900 blocks of the busy thoroughfare.

Borough Manager Gene Zarayko said the administration has been asked by residents to remove the no parking-street sweeping signs on Main Street, from Edelweis Haus to Mario's Pizza.

Council wasted little time in unanimously agreeing the signs will remain intact. Borough council stressed the cleanliness of its streets is a priority for the community.

Zarayko pointed out residents may not park in designated areas for two hours, from 8-10 a.m., Thursdays on the west side of Main Street and Fridays on the east side of Main.

Signs posted on the east side of Main by the traffic light ban parking 3-6 p.m. to allow traffic to proceed more easily north on Main or for those making a left onto the Coplay-Northampton Bridge.

Councilman Anthony Lopsonzski Sr. said the lower end of Main Street is a gateway to the borough.

"My opinion is things are looking a little amock," Lopsonzski said. "Others appreciate not dragging dirt in, yet it is a minor pain."

Council President John Yurish and Council Vice President Robert McHale said other neighborhoods could make similar requests should this one be granted.
