LHS to play for EC title
Liberty's football team may not have reached the District 2-4-11 subregional playoffs, but the Hurricanes are still playing as they head into Friday night's Eastern Conference 4A championship game against Emmaus.
The Hurricanes (6-5) knocked off East Stroudsburg South 36-6 last Saturday afternoon to set up an encounter with Emmaus (6-5) in this week's championship tilt.
The Green Hornets are coming off a 15-6 road victory over Scranton and both sides will be looking forward to their second encounter of the year, as Liberty defeated Emmaus 42-33 back on September 26.
"For our seniors this is a very big game," said Liberty head coach John Truby. "It might not be districts, but it's another opportunity for our guys to represent Liberty. For the program this is big, we want to win this game to get ourselves ready for the 2015 - 2016 season."
And for senior quarterback Doug Erney, it's another chance to add on to his record of becoming Liberty's all-time single-season passing leader, as he surpassed Dan Persa's 2,104 yards on Saturday with a 149 yard performance to give him 2,113 yards this season.
Erney capped off the half last week by throwing a 56-yard score to Darius Jones as time expired.
Jones had three touchdowns on the day, including a 66-yard sweep run and a 35-yard punt return. Ryan Lawrence also punched in two scores from the ground to go with his 110 yards rushing. Lawrence played a key role in the Hurricanes win over Emmaus earlier this season, as he ran for 151 yards and three touchdowns.
Truby knows that he'll need another solid performance from his group all the way around, especially on defense, where they'll have to stop Andrew Davidson, who ran for 133 yards the last time they played.
Davidson has been a beast ever since former teammate and running back Wyl Miller was dismissed from the team weeks ago. Davidson has rushed for 1,748 yards this season and 23 TD's. He helped Emmaus rally from a fourth quarter deficit last week, by scoring two touchdowns, as he finished with 113 yards on the night.
"Defensively, we need to slow down Davidson and put them into throwing situations," said Truby of the keys for his team this week. "This week is a big challenge for us. Emmaus is a very good running team and we have shown at times the inability to stop the run. That is going to be the big focus for us this week preparing ourselves for their run game."
Playing against a fellow East Penn Conference opponent adds some luster to both teams season finale this week.
"I think playing against any EPC team always adds little more competitiveness to the game," said Truby. "This is a big game for both of our groups of seniors. I'm sure they want to finish their year on a good note as well."
