Trojan football opens playoffs at Stroudsburg
After winning on the road at Emmaus last Friday night 41-14, Parkland's third straight win, the Trojans will now hit the road again for the first round of the District 2-11 Subregional tournament Friday. The No. 7 seed in Class AAAA, Parkland will take on second-seeded Stroudsburg.
Even with a low seed and a far trip, the Trojans are just glad to be back in the district tournament, so they can go for their third consecutive title.
"These kids just love playing football and they want to continue playing," said head coach Jim Morgans. "I like being able to play against teams that we haven't played yet, it's exciting because there's that sense of mystery and neither team knows much about each other."
Parkland got to where they are after taking down the rival Green Hornets, thanks to an offensive outburst from many different contributors, and a solid defensive performance that contained a tough running back in Andy Davidson.
"The kids did a great job defending and slowing him down, and just containing him from going off," said Morgans. "He is a special player and had almost 1,000 yards in just the three games prior. Our offense made it difficult for them because they had to defend the whole field."
The Trojans have a variety of players that they can use including Nolan Ridgeway, Devante Cross, Jarey Elder, Kenny Yeboah, and Gabe Clark, along with Anthony Pagliaro and Josh Dieter.
Stroudsburg brings a strong offense of their own. Running back Gerald Douglas is a 1,000-yard rusher, and the Mounties have not yet seen what it is like to lose in 2014, so confidence won't be an issue.
"They are a really good and well-balanced team," said Morgans. "They're in this tournament because they are the best team from the Northern division. They're undefeated so they are going to be a challenge."
Parkland got what looks like a favorable draw in the district bracket. The Trojans are on the opposite side of the bracket from Easton, Whitehall and Freedom. A win over Stroudsburg would give put Parkland in a semifinal match up against either No. 3 Delaware Valley or No. 6 Wyoming Valley West.
