PHS boys harriers take 15th at states
Over the past decade, the Parkland boys cross country team has become very familiar with the state meet. In fact, the boys have had a team run in states in every season since 2004, which includes back-to-back 11th-place finishes in 2005 and 2006.
And while the Trojans weren't able to crack the top 20 teams from 2009-2011, steady strides have been evident in recent years in Hershey.
On Saturday, this year's group of Trojans wrote the next chapter in Parkland boys cross country history with another solid showing among the best competitors in the state. After coming in 17th in 2012 and 16th in 2013, the Trojans placed 15th as a team on Saturday at the PIAA State Championships at Hershey's Entertainment Complex.
"It's better being [at states] as a team than as an individual," junior Daniel Kyvelos said. "You basically have your brothers around you, and you get to work hard with each other, help each other and push each other to do better."
Kyvelos was the Trojans' top finisher on the day, placing 77th out of 239 Class AAA runners in a time of 17:01.
"I felt pretty strong in the last half of the race," Kyvelos said. "It's always rough starting off fast because I like to go a little bit slow, and then settle myself in. I had to work hard in the beginning to get myself up there.
"When the third mile came around, I was just working as hard as I could to keep fending people off and passing people to help the team out and myself."
Hailemichael Geiger (114th), Grant Newman (140th), Sam Morgan (153rd), Justin Bergen (172nd), Jonathan Ceh (179th) and Steven Kayleycik (194th) weren't far behind to round out the top seven.
"We were trying to get at least in the top 15 teams, and hopefully in the top 10," said Kyvelos. "We worked hard together, so it's good."
He may be a junior, but this is just Kyvelos's second season running cross country. A year ago he placed 75th as the Trojans' top runner as well. The results were extremely similar in this his second go-around with the team.
"Last year I ran a 17:10, but I've been injured this season and sick," Kyvelos said. "This was the first time I ran three meets in a row."
Following her 14th-place finish in the District 11 Cross Country Championships, senior Cara Moyer was the lone Lady Trojan representative at states. The girls team just missed out on a bid to the state level after Moyer and the team earned a spot in her previous three seasons.
But despite not having her team there on her side for the first time in four years, Moyer still put together a solid outing that capped off a complete career. She finished in 123rd place in a time of 20:29, the best mark of her four-year run at states.
"It feels pretty good," Moyer said. "I was still hoping to do a little better, but I'm still happy with it.
"I started off really well in the first two miles. I just needed to finish stronger."
Moyer's first mile of 5:56 was fast enough to place her in the top 80 runners early on. At the second-mile mark, she fell slightly to 95th place after posting a 6:17 pace after the first two miles.
