Hawks down Vikes
If there's one thing that Bethlehem Catholic has had all year, it's the consistent services of running back Michael McDaniel. The Golden Hawk rusher put on another impressive performance last Friday night at J. Birney Crum stadium, running for 237 yards and all four Becahi touchdowns in a 28-13 victory.
The win puts the Golden Hawks at 9-1 and clinched the top-seed for this week's District 11 3A playoffs when they host fourth-seeded Lehighton (8-2) Saturday night.
McDaniel put Becahi up with 4:40 in the first quarter, bursting through for a 14-yard TD score on 4th and 1 to give the Hawks a 7-0 lead entering the second quarter.
Patrick McKellick helped get Central into the game with a strip on Damian Diaz to cause a fumble, which led to McKellick returning it 69 yards to the Hawks 1.
Alvin Pacheco ran it in from one-yard out, but a failed PAT kept Becahi ahead 7-6 with 9:15 in the half.
McDaniel answered on the next drive with a 53-yard score less than a minute late for the 14-6 lead. Central answered the bell again in the second quarter when quarterback Mason Kholi ran for a 20-yard TD to make it 14-13 heading into the half.
Becahi gave themselves the cushion they needed in the third quarter, when McDaniel rushed from 16 yards out for his third score on the night with 4:35 left in the period.
The Hawks then recovered a fumble on Central's ensuing drive and McDaniel took the next play 50 yards to the house for a 28-13 advantage.
Being able to face a tough contest with adversity is exactly what head coach Joe Henrich wanted before the playoffs, as he knows his team still has plenty to work on if they want to defend their district title from a year ago.
"The adversity in the game was good for us," Henrich said. "We need to learn how to be a 48 minute team. The reality is we had some big scoring games this year where we scored over 50 points and I think our guys have become accustomed to just stepping on the field and scoring big points. That's not going to happen and when that doesn't happen, it's like we all of a sudden don't feel good about ourselves. We got to be a focused, grind it out football team."
