Team effort beats Nazareth

Jarey Elder used his legs, and some open space created for him by his blockers, to single-handedly put his Parkland football team ahead 14-0 with two consecutive touchdowns en route to a 41-6 win over Nazareth.

The senior took a handoff and ran downfield for 51 yards on the Trojans' first possession last week in their final regular season home game. Then, after a Nazareth three-and-out, Elder returned a punt for 50 yards as Parkland outmatched the Blue Eagles all night for a senior night win at Parkland School District Stadium.

"It was a pretty cool experience," said Elder. "But the blocking was great on both of those plays. The offensive line and special teams opened up some holes and I just took the lanes and it was easy from there."

It was an overall team effort as the Trojans did it from both sides of the ball.

The offense put up 41 points in the first half, which was all of the scoring that it needed, and the defense gave up only a late fourth-quarter touchdown when the game was already out of hand.

"We just played an all-around good game," said Elder. "Everyone got to the ball and played hard every play. That's how it's preached to us, and that's how we practice it. This gives us a lot of confidence which is good for us."

It gives the Trojans some confidence in a good time, with only one regular season game remaining, a trip down Cedar Crest Boulevard to rival Emmaus, before district play opens up.

After a four-game stretch prior to the Nazareth game, Parkland (7-2 overall) went 2-2 against Whitehall, Liberty, Easton, and Freedom.

Fellow senior Preston Saylor also got involved in the scoring. The tailback tallied two rushing touchdowns from 2 and 5 yards. Nolan Ridgway was featured in the rushing attack with a 3-yard touchdown late in the second quarter.

Not to be outdone, the passing game featured a 66-yard connection between quarterback Devante Cross and receiver Kenny Yeboah.

Now the Trojans have their sights set on finishing the season strong against a team they love to beat.

"We can't do anything that we don't normally do," said Elder. "We're going to have to win in the trenches if we want to win the game. We just have to play hard-nosed football."
