Candidates for election were asked what they think is the most pressing issue for voters in the 183rd Legislative District and what their stand is on that issue. Their responses:
Incumbent Democrat
Daniel McNeill
The problem that's most pressing is property tax relief. We're looking at school funding formulas for how to get tax relief, especially to seniors.
If it were up to me, we'd take the gaming money [from the Sands Casino], put it in one fund and use it as property tax relief. [But] being in the minority – with a Republican house, governor and senate, it's pretty tough to get things passed.
Everybody needs to help. Forget 'I' – I don't think any one person can get anything done without a "we." All I want to do is try to be bipartisan and try to get things done.
Republican
Dave Molony
In my going door to door throughout West Bethlehem, Hanover and Fountain Hill, I've found the most pressing issue remains removing school property taxes from property entirely. In my discussions with the Republican leadership, the equivalent to House Bill 76 may well pass in the next legislative session, if enough members push for the legislation.
Given this onerous form of taxation with its ever-increasing cost that effects those with a fixed income, we need more than just a promised vote, but someone who will relentlessly push for its passage. I will do exactly that, from a State House majority member position.
I never guarantee anything other than I will do my utmost, but this single thing will remain my focus, as I'm determined to make this legislation pass for its relief to my constituents.
I feel confident that if elected we can see it become law within the next two years.
