PHS girls volleyball team reaches D-11 final

Parkland has the game it has wanted now for over a year. It is not just another game against a rival. It is not just the fourth time against the same opponent this season, second in a playoff final. It is a rematch against the team that sent the Trojans home without a district title a year ago.

Last year the Lehigh Valley Conference champion Trojans were upset by Emmaus, 3-0 in the District 11 Class AAA semifinal. But with Parkland's 3-0 sweep over Nazareth Tuesday night at Whitehall High School, Parkland eyes a bit of revenge against Emmaus in Thursday's title match.

"This year's team is completely different from last year's" said junior hitter Sienna Salvaggio, who was a member of that team a year ago. "Our seniors are doing a good job stepping up and leading us. Emmaus is an unbelievable team and has good players all around. We have to focus on the next step, which is next game."

Parkland has had a very successful 2014 campaign to date with not many teams challenging the state's No. 1 ranked team. And that didn't change Tuesday night.

The Trojans had each game well in hand on their way to wins of 25-14, 25-11, and 25-7.

"I think we focused well on the little things," said Salvaggio. "We did a good job communicating and knew where each one of us was on the court at all times. The defense played amazing and everything clicked. One of our mottos is always back each other up, and we play like that."

Salvaggio (9 kills) and Erika Foose (8 kills) dominated the net, and Avery Perosa (9 digs) was solid in the back. Kristin Krause recorded 26 assists in leading the offensive tempo.

Now the Trojans look to complete one of their goals each season with another district championship under head coach Mike Krause.

"You focus and you play like every game is your last game," said Salvaggio. "We just work well as a team and act like each team across the net from us is the best in the state. We just have to keep working hard."

The district final is set for Thursday at 7 p.m. at Whitehall High School.
