Motorists familiar with traveling the northern route in the village across the Cold Springs Bridge will continue to travel alternate routes and detours until sometime in 2017.
The detours are needed for the demolition of the present bridge and construction of a new span.
Whitehall Mayor Edward D. Hozza Jr. reported no unusual traffic issues have resulted, just the expected inconvenience because Second Street at Main Street has been closed to northbound traffic.
Utility work is under way at the site that will also involve road widening. The PennDOT project is estimated at $5.8 million.
Over the next several months, there will be major traffic changes at the Route 22 (Lehigh Valley Thruway)/Fullerton Avenue interchange and the Lehigh River Bridge.
The major improvements for the project will take three years with an expected completion date of 2018.
The cost for the Lehigh River Bridge and Route 22/Fullerton Avenue interchange is pegged at $37.5 million.
