D-11 playoffs clearer

Most of the playoff spots for the District 11 football postseason have been clinched, but the pecking order for teams heading into the final week are still up in the air.

District 11 officials Bob Hartman and Jason Zimmerman went over the scenarios again Monday afternoon and we'll start off with the 4A scene.

The current order of teams is listed as : Easton (1), Stroudsburg (2), Delaware Valley (3), Whitehall (4), Freedom (5), Parkland (6), Wyoming Valley West (7) and Pleasant Valley (8).

The top seven teams have already clinched subregional playoff berths, but Pleasant Valley (8), Liberty (10) and Emmaus (11) are all still in play for the eighth and final spot. Scranton, which is listed ninth currently in the power points, is eliminated from subregional contention.

The scenario for Pleasant Valley is the simplest, as the Bears need to beat Stroudsburg to secure a berth. A PV loss, as well as losses by Liberty and Emmaus also keeps the Bears in, but those are big ifs.

A Pleasant Valley loss, coupled with a Liberty victory over Freedom Saturday would probably push the Hurricanes into the tournament, despite a potential victory by Emmaus.

The Green Hornets need the most outside help in any scenario, as they need Pleasant Valley and Liberty losses, as well as an upset win over Parkland to have a chance.

In that scenario, things would still be unsettled, as Emmaus would need some of the teams they defeated earlier this season to win in week 10 to give additional power points.

In 3A, Bethlehem Catholic looks to secure the top seed with a win this week with Southern Lehigh most likely locking up the second seed. A Becahi loss to Central Catholic along with Solehi victory, would flip-flop both schools rankings. Saucon Valley is currently in third and take on Palisades this week in a tricky affair. A loss by the Panthers could knock them out of the playoffs, but that scenario isn't that likely.

Lehighton (4), Blue Mountain (5) and Jim Thorpe (6) will all be vying for the fourth and final spot. A Lehighton victory over Jim Thorpe this week puts the Indians in the playoffs. If Blue Mountain and Jim Thorpe both win, Blue Mountain would get the fourth seed.

In 2A, North Schuylkill has clinched the top seed, followed by Northwestern and Palisades in the two and three spots respectively. Palmerton is currently in fourth, followed by Northern Lehigh in fifth. Those two schools square off against each other this week and the winner would clinch the fourth seed. A loss by Palisades this week could drop them to fourth potentially, but the Pirates have already clinched a playoff berth.

Single A action has Pius X, Marian Catholic and Williams Valley in order from one to three. All three have clinched berths, but their seeds are still up in the air. Mahanoy Area and Tri-Valley are currently fourth and fifth respectively. If both teams win this week, Tri-Valley would jump Mahanoy for the final spot.
