It had been a little over a decade since the Freedom girls' soccer team has made districts.
That streak ended when the Pates finished their season at 10-8 this year. The girls had to wait for the EPC conference tournament to finish before they could find out who they would play in the first round of districts.
The Patriots learned that they would face Emmaus in their first game. In their previous meeting, the Pates lost to the Hornets 3-0.
At the start of the game, the Patriots earned a free kick around the half line. Senior defender Taryn Donnelly sent in the kick where the ball became loose and sophomore Giselle Sanchez scored the first goal of the game.
With less than ten minutes in the half, the game was delayed due to a thunderstorm. After waiting 50 minutes for the storm to pass, the game resumed.
But, Shortly into the second half, Emmaus scored to tie it at 1-1. And then with less than two minutes left in the game, the Hornets scored another to secure their move to the next round.
Even though the Patriots ended their season on a rough note, they still got to reach their goal of qualifying for districts.
Heading into next season, the Patriots will have a strong junior class but they will lose a group of seniors that started for the Pates this year.
