Soccer probe completed at NASD

The Northampton Area School District administration has completed its investigation into allegations that taunts were made by Northampton Area High School Konkrete Kids boys varsity soccer team players at a Nazareth Area High School Blue Eagles boys soccer team player.

During the Northampton-Nazareth boys soccer game Oct. 9, Ibraham Tounkara, a Blue Eagles player from West Africa, was allegedly taunted with references to Ebola and his race by Northampton players.

Tounkara was ejected from the game after he got into an altercation.

Tounkara has lived for three years with the family of Fountain Hill Police Chief Edward Bachert. Tounkara's family lives in Guinea, one of the African nations beset by the Ebola epidemic.

In the wake of allegations, the Northampton soccer team coaches have resigned.

Stated NASD Superintendent Joseph Kovalchik in an email response to The Press:

"The administration has conducted a thorough investigation and appropriate discipline will be dispensed to any students who violated the code of conduct.

"The district doesn't tolerate any form of discrimination and the district will follow all policies and procedures if warranted.

"Northampton and Nazareth Area School Districts worked in collaboration on this incident."

Kovalchik did not disclose if, when or how Northampton students could be disciplined, nor the number of students who might be disciplined, nor did he detail the investigation findings. Student confidentiality prohibits public disclosure of disciplinary proceedings.

Kovalchik confirmed to The Press that Northampton boys head soccer coach Craig Carvin and boys assistant coach Jason Melniszyn submitted resignations Oct. 14.

The Northampton-Nazareth Oct. 9 soccer game allegations were not discussed publicly at the Oct. 13 NASD school board meeting.

School board members meet again 6:30 p.m. Oct. 27 in the meeting room of the administration building, 2014 Laubach Ave., Northampton.

At press time, it was not known whether the high school boys soccer coaches' resignations are on the agenda of the Oct. 27 meeting.

The NASD school board routinely votes on resignations and hirings of coaches and other district personnel. The board also votes on student expulsion hearing waivers. Students are identified by number only.

The agenda for a NASD board of education meeting is usually posted on the district web site the Friday before the Monday night meeting. The agenda for the Oct. 27 meeting is expected to be posted Oct. 24.

The Northampton boys soccer team game with Nazareth was its last of the season in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference. The Konkrete Kids won 2-1.
