Construction on the Borough of Northampton's proposed uptown park on Main Street is expected to begin later this fall, after the farmers market closes for the season.
Borough Manager Gene Zarayko said most of the work in establishing the park will not be visible to the public. The improvements on the site will occur underground. Electrical, water and other utilities will be laid before any other work takes place.
"Depending on the weather, work on the park will take place during the winter," Zarayko said.
The park will include a gazebo, the design of which will be different from the typical gazebos found in parks, officials have said.
Zarayko said the park will also include benches, trees, shrubbery and signage that will compliment the uptown.
Funding for the park will come from grants. The maximum amount of funding allocated for the park is $105,000.
The park is located on grounds which years ago housed Kroope's Cotton Shoppe before it was destroyed by fire. Grant funding allowed the borough to purchase the property from Brian Kroope.
The borough has not officially designated a name for the park, other than calling it the uptown park.
