'Canes set for districts
Liberty's field hockey program snuck their way into the District 11 3A postseason, but the Hurricanes won't surprise anyone when they open the tournament today at Whitehall.
Liberty (8-10, 8-8) enters the field as the eleventh seed and travel to sixth seeded Whitehall (11-7-1, 9-4-1) in the preliminary round of districts.
For 'Canes head coach Mary Kathryn Omdahl, getting to districts is a great step for this young team.
"My kids are young in age and experience, so this was an added bonus this season," said Omdahl. "It's a good experience going into next year. When you look back at our scores, we did get beat soundly a few times, but lost only by one goal to many quality teams."
Liberty did not face Whitehall this year, but the Zephyrs bring quality to the table, as they lost in the East Penn Conference semifinals to Stroudsburg by a 4-1 margin last week.
"We certainly have our work cut out for us," said Omdahl. "They are fast and well skilled and get to practice every day on the turf. We're going to need to score more than one or two goals."
Holding down Whitehall's attack is easier said than done, as the Zephyrs are led by the trio of the Cunningham sisters.
Kourtney, Kassidy and Kylee form a unique bond in the Lehigh Valley field hockey scene and they produce. Kourtney has scored 24 goals this year to go along with 17 assists, while Cassidy has scored 11 times and Kylee has added seven goals and five assists.
"I've only seen Whitehall once this season," Omdahl said, "but we need to give stick to stick passes and be able to anticipate their centering passes in order to cut off their momentum to the cage."
In Wednesday's other action, eighth seeded Nazareth hosts ninth seeded Pleasant Valley and seventh seeded Pocono Mountain East hosts tenth seeded Allen.
Stroudsburg is the top seed, followed by second seed Emmaus and third seed Easton. Each of those three teams earned first round byes and open action on Saturday.
The only other match finalized at the moment is a four-five contest between Northampton and Parkland during Saturday's quarterfinals as well.
