BC falls to Stroudsburg

It may have been Bethlehem Catholic's first loss of the season last weekend, but it's not the end of the world according to head coach Joe Henrich.

After committing five turnovers against Stroudsburg (8-0, 7-0) Saturday night, the Mounties had enough ammunition to pull out a 23-19 victory over their East Penn Conference North division counterparts.

The loss for Becahi (7-1, 6-1) means that the Hawks probably won't have a chance at winning the North division title, but that isn't what Henrich and company have their sights set on moving forward.

"Our ultimate goal is not to win a division title," Henrich said. "We have a lot more to play for this season and I hope that we can use this loss as a tool for us moving forward."

The Hawks won every statistical category, except the most important onethe turnover battle.

With quarterback Julian Spigner throwing two interceptions, one of which was returned for a touchdown, and three lost fumbles on the night by the team, the uncharacteristic turnover ratio (5-to-2) is what ultimately doomed the Golden Hawks.

Michael McDaniel rushed for 193 yards and one score, to go along with a 36-yard TD reception to lead Becahi, as he was countered by Stroudsburg's Gerald Douglas, who ran 34 times for 171 yards and a touchdown. Mounties quarterback John Jakobsen was only 4-of-11 for 66 yards on the night, but his lone TD throw27-yard strike to Marcello Riccardi with 7:40 left in the fourth quarter put Stroudsburg up for good at 23-19.

The Mounties defense essentially won them the game late in the fourth, when they got two stops on McDaniel runs inside the five-yard line on third and fourth downs.

"They played with a major chip on their shoulder," said Henrich about Stroudsburg. "I don't think we matched their energy level. I mean we turned it over five times and still had a chance to win. We made mistakes that we normally don't and we didn't play with that same chip on the shoulder as they did. You get what you deserve in football and we deserved to lose this game."
