LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

A haunting you can go along the canal for Halloween

Haunted history comes alive at Hugh Moore Park with the first "Haunted Hugh Moore Park," 6 - 9 p.m. Oct. 24, 25, 30 and 31, 220 S. Delaware Drive, Easton.

Halloween-themed activities include a lantern-lit canal path walk, canal boat ride where ghostly stories will be told, pumpkin hunt, pumpkin decorating, and tractor-pulled hayride.

April Andrews, Director of Community Outreach for the Delaware and Lehigh National Heritage Corridor, explains that historical events inspired "Haunted Hugh Moore Park":

"There are lots of ghost stories surrounding the canal and the canal paths. Some are creepy happenings that are exaggerated for the event. Others are completely true to life.

"For example, there was a washer-woman who lived in the lock-tender's house at one time. We exaggerated a tale of how people started to go missing when she lived there for the lantern walk.

"But the stories told on the canal boat ride are what really happened."

Dennis Scholl, Director of Education for the Delaware and Lehigh National Heritage Corridor, was inspired to create a Halloween-centered event after pondering the many number of spooky stories related to the canal.

"He spoke to city of Easton [officials] about that and the connection to the history of the area and it just all started from there," says Andrews.

"Haunted Hugh Moore Park" staff will be dressed in historical garb for the event and attendees are welcome to come in costume.

Judy England McCarthy, a storyteller with the Lehigh Valley Storytelling Guild, will sit by a campfire at the entrance to the park, telling the story of the origin of the Halloween holiday.

Reservations are required for the family-friendly event.

"This is an event for everyone," says Andrews. "While it will be spooky and fun, there isn't anything gruesome or too scary. There are lots of activities for children."
