New league, same Lady Trojans
It may be a new conference, but the leader of the pack has remained the same. At least that's the case on the girls cross country scene.
Following three straight Lehigh Valley Conference titles, the Parkland girls added their fourth league title in a row after winning the inaugural Eastern Pennsylvania Conference Cross Country Meet. Senior Cara Moyer finished in eighth place to pace the Lady Trojans, who finished six points ahead of regular season champ Easton on Tuesday at Bethlehem Municipal Field.
"It feels really great, especially to finish out my senior year winning all four years," Moyer said. "I started off strong and finished strong. I was definitely happy about that."
After Moyer's top-10 finish, Parkland's trio of Sydney DelVecchio (16th), Madeline LeFrock (17th) and Mikayla Stoudt (18th) finished consecutively in helping the Lady Trojans to another conference crown. Alexis Dongvort rounded out the top five scorers with a 21st-place showing.
"I pretty much stayed with the same people throughout the race," Moyer said. "I passed four people in the finish, but other than that I was mostly with the same people."
Moyer had goals of finishing in the top 10 and earning a medal, which went to the top 12 runners. She also wanted to put forth a showing that would help her teammates reach the top of the league mountain once again.
She did both.
"I really did [feel good]," Moyer said. "I wasn't so sure coming into the race, but when I was out there I felt really good."
Liberty's Raisa Kochmaruk finished first in a time of 19:26.40, followed by Central Catholic's Colleen Daday and Pocono Mountain East's Rachel Davalos.
The duo of Colin Abert and Kevin Lapsansky finished first and second in the boys' race to propel Easton into first place. But right behind the Red Rovers was Parkland, who came in second place as a team, led by Hailemichael Geiger's sixth-place finish.
"The way I started was amazing," Geiger said. "We went out for two minutes, and we settled in. The pace felt really good. It was nice and smooth. I was in the top five from the beginning.
"I trained here on Friday and Saturday. We did pick-ups and stuff. It was amazing. The weather was great. It wasn't too hot. We did like 12 pick-ups and about a total of 11 miles here. I felt great after that."
In what was one of the warmer days in recent weeks (temperature was in the mid-70s at the start of the race) Hailemichael used the climate toward his advantage throughout the race. Being from Ethiopia, he thrived in the warm October weather. Others, on the other hand, didn't fair as well in the drastic shift in temperature.
"It's the same thing there [Ethiopia] so I'm used to it," Geiger said. "It gives me a lot of good advantages, especially in the humid weather. I do a lot better in the humid than the cold weather.
"I always do better in the humid days. In Carlisle [at the Carlisle High School Invitational], I came in 26th place. My time was 16:14, and I was very impressed with that time."
With a little less than a half of a mile to go, Geiger took sole possession of fifth place by passing Whitehall's Gabe Lamm. He held that spot momentarily until Lamm surged ahead in the final 100 meters.
"We had about 100 meters left, and he just took off from there," Geiger said. "I just tried to stay up with him the whole time. We finished together. It was amazing."
Grant Newman and Daniel Kyvelos finished in ninth and 10th place, respectively, while Sam Moran, Steven Kaleycik and Justin Bergen placed 14th, 15th and 16th for the Trojans.
