Girls soccer builds tricycles for Easter Seals

Giving back has always been the motto for the Parkland community, and in particular, the girls soccer team.

For the last five years, the Trojans varsity and junior varsity squads partake in a team building function held at the practice fields where they build tricycles from scratch for families that have children who would appreciate a gift such as this.

It all started from head coach Al Haddad and his business firm, and took off from there, becoming a yearly tradition for his team to see what giving back really means.

The Easter Seals of Eastern Pennsylvania select two families each year that have children with physical disabilities to be able to ride specially made trikes. Each one has a seat in the back in order to assist a physical therapist in creating a strap or seatbelt if required to assist the child in staying on the bike. The girls also help train the children to ride the tricycles.

"I work with the Easter Seals so I've always seen the benefits of helping those who are less fortunate," said Haddad. "I first did this with clients and then I thought why not do this with the girls. We go and buy the parts and the girls put them together so it's a team building exercise."

The Trojan teams build the trikes before the Easter Seals arrive with the families. It's been a great experience for the teams, one with which they take away a lot of good from.

"It's just so special to see their reactions," said senior back Erica Bross. "It's great for them and how they get to interact with us. They're always smiling and it's a great way to bond as a team."

Parkland has seen much success on the field over the past five years, but this team bonding function has truly been a success to many individuals more than just the team and the coaching staff.
