County DA to look into noise at Edelweis Haus

Northampton County District Attorney John Morganelli will delve into complaints lodged against the Edelweis Haus, 702 Main St., by neighbors in the 700 block of Main Street in Northampton.

The complaints mainly deal with noise coming from the bar.

Morganelli told The Press Oct. 10 he will schedule a meeting with police Chief Ron Morey regarding issues raised by residents.

"I will check it out," Morganelli said.

He also said he will confer with residents and tavern owner Tanya Hamlin.

Morganelli is not drawing any conclusions at this time. He said he canceled an earlier meeting because he was ill.

The residents who packed the Oct. 2 meeting of council addressed concerns of loud music, loud and unruly patrons, cigarette butts and strewn beer cans. The complaints were later disputed by bouncer Chad Deutsch, saying only bottled beer is sold at the business.

Borough Manager Gene Zarayko reported the borough building inspector was dispatched to the Edelweis Haus to meet with Hamlin to ensure code and ADA requirements are met with Hamlin's plans to upgrade the kitchen and bathroom.

Hamlin said she wants soundproof with insulation in the ballroom. However, no specific timetable was provided.

Live and jukebox music and pool playing were so loud that neighbors like Michelle Fox and others said they and their families were unable to sleep.

Fox said the problems go back to when Hamlin opened the business in March, prompting calls to police and the state Liquor Control Board.

Mayor Thomas Reenock said he will meet with neighbors and Hamlin at the tavern regularly to discuss problems.
