Coplay Garden Club blooming all year long

If there's one thing that Jane Gillespie, president of Coplay Garden Club, enjoys the most, it's when people and flowers come together.

"It's just neat to see other people's flowers from their yards, like things you've never heard of," said Gillespie, who has been club president for two years now.

She said she also enjoys meeting the many different community members who walk into St. John's Lutheran Church the last Thursday of the month.

Coplay Garden Club meets nine months out of the year and every meeting is different.

"Every month we either have a speaker or we have a programmer where we do something," Gillespie said.

At the end of each year, three awards are given to members, based on judging categories including houseplants, specimens – which can be outside plants, perennials or annuals – and artistic arrangements.

The first-place winner receives five points, second place receives four and third-place receives three. In December, their points are added together in order to announce three grand end-of-the-year winners.

Gillespie said the club is always looking for fun activities to engage members.

"We try to do go on field trips twice a year," she said.

Point Phillips Perennials is one of the club's favorite day trips. Club members usually visit once every three years. Point Phillips Perennials features two acres of display gardens and has special classes and tours available.

To help keep the garden club thriving, members participate in an annual fundraiser at Coplay Community Days in late August. There they sell "flower arrangements, houseplants, baked goods, coffee, tea and water," Gillespie said. Additionally, a $3 yearly membership fee and $1 monthly fee allow the club to purchase supplies, such as flower pots, utensils and coffee.

In the past, the Coplay Garden Club had only 15 members. Today, the club membership is 25.

"We're growing and we're getting bigger and better," Gillespie said.

"We really are into just learning and doing things that pertain to flowers and plants. We're very low key. We like to have fun ... and we always have good snacks," Gillespie said. "We have a lot of good friends here."
