Top-ranked volleyball team beats Emmaus
As the public address announcer read the starting lineup and coaching staffs, he finished by stating Parkland's undefeated record and No. 1 state ranking. To date, the Trojans (25-0-1) have not been challenged in the East Penn Conference.
But last Friday afternoon, Parkland was taken to the brink in the third game of its match against Emmaus. The Trojans came out victorious, taking the match 3-0 by scores of 25-20, 25-13 and 32-30.
"I think our focus has been really, really good," said junior Avery Perosa, who had six aces and 14 digs against the Hornets. "Our front row has been amazing, and has been making great blocks. Everyone has been playing well and working together. The focus is there."
One of the members of that front row was Sam Webber. Webber contributed eight kills and three blocks. Sienna Salvaggio (9 kills, 3 blocks) and Erika Foose (10 kills, 4 blocks, 3 aces) also had a hand in not allowing easy points from the Green Hornets.
"We're always committed to keep our hands up and over the net so we can get some blocks," said Webber. "We stayed close together and that helped with always getting a hand on the ball. There was always back up in case we missed, so it would never hit the floor."
It was competitive in the first game, with the score tied up until the 12th point, but then the Trojans made a run to go up by as much as 12-6. The Green Hornets fought back and brought it to just one point twice at 15-14 and 16-15, but Parkland once again was able to break through with consecutive points.
In game two, the Trojans got ahead early, and never looked back.
But in the third game, Emmaus was own 24-19 before running off five straight points to tie the game. The two teams went back-and-forth for the next 13 points until Parkland put it away at the 32nd point.
"It's important for us to play well and get wins against good teams like this," said Perosa. "We want to keep this going."
Brooke Robertson had 12 kills. Morgan Sherwin tallied four. Junior Kristin Krause contributed 38 assists.
Krause was also named Pennsylvania Player of the Week by the American Volleyball Coaches Association and Maxpreps.
