Northampton County: Council proposes cutting own pay

Northampton County Council members Glenn Geissinger and Mat Benol are proposing a $1,500 pay cut to council members, knocking their annual salaries down from the current $9,500 to $8,000.

"County council must first look to itself to ensure it is a prudent steward of the public funds," states the proposed ordinance, which will be voted on at the Oct. 16 meeting. But because of the Home Rule Charter, they won't be looking to themselves until 2018. It is unlawful to alter any elected official's salary during that person's term of office.

The $13,500 total savings translates to 0.004% of next year's proposed $334.4 million budget.
