weston senior living center
On the first Tuesday of each month, Emmaus Garden Club members Nancy Barnes, Claire McCrea, Cindy Stull and Denise Tempest help Weston Senior Living Center, Emmaus, residents embellish the facility with flowers. Together they develop floral arrangements and personal connections.
Denise Fegley, activities supervisor for the center which is located on Broad Street in Emmaus, oversees numerous activities designed to keep the residents energized and social.
Emmaus Garden Club members first connected with the center in March 2012. The club's spring and summer meetings include floral competitions. The best horticultural specimens are then transported to the center.
Club members assist residents in creating floral arrangements which are placed in their rooms and in public areas throughout the building. The garden club, which celebrated its 65th anniversary in 2014, has gradually expanded this horticultural therapy program. The large bird feeder situated on the Broad Street side of the facility and the flowers blooming at the front of the building are club donations.
Furthermore, garden club members escorted several of the center's residents to the club's bi-yearly flower show, hosted by the local Moravian Church. Many of the residents had never before attended a flower show and they enjoyed meeting the gardeners who grow the flowers for their arrangements. According to club member and volunteer Nancy Barnes, "They [the residents] were thrilled."
Regional Activities Director Carole Zarayko explains a well-rounded program helps the center's clients to remain "physically, spritually and emotionally" fit. Consequently, each month is packed with sessions ranging from limbering exercises like "Morning Stretch" to trivia games to bingo to bread making to Bible study.
Seasonal projects are also incorporated. For example, this autumn residents may participate in a scarecrow-making contest.
Visits by entertainers and volunteers from the community willing to share their talents with the residents are another integral portion of the activities schedule.
