Pates survive vs. Dieruff

A 14-0 third quarter deficit to Dieruff was the last thing on the mind for anyone in Freedom's football program, but the Patriots escaped last Friday's tussle with the Huskies unscathed in the loss department, as the Patriots scored 21 unanswered points in the final 16 minutes of the contest to keep their undefeated record going at 6-0.

However, as head coach Jason Roeder admitted his team walked away with "a sense of relief," the end product is not how Roeder envisioned a contest against a 2-4 opponent unfolding.

"I think one thing we were good at the first four weeks of the season was not turning the ball over," Roeder said. "We turned it over last week and we had two fumbles this week. We also had too many penalties (16-for-130 yards) that came at crucial times. "It just seemed like everything went bad at the same time, so we come out of this game with a sense of relief."

Dieruff got the scoring started in the second quarter off a four-yard touchdown run by Devonte Robinson to take a 7-0 lead into halftime.

Robinson gave Dieruff a shocking 14-0 lead with 4:20 left in the third quarter off a one-yard plunge, but that's when Freedom's offense finally hit pay dirt, as quarterback Joe Young ran from eight yards out for the Pates first score of the game.

On Dieruff's next play from scrimmage, Joe Young intercepted Huskies' quarterback Chris Marks and returned it 26-yards to even the score at 14 apiece with 1:05 left in the third quarter.

Roberto Diez scored the eventual game-winner from a yard out to push Freedom ahead 21-14 in the fourth.

The Huskies committed five turnovers on the night to help Freedom's cause, as the Patriots hit the road Friday night for a huge matchup against Whitehall (5-1).

The Zephyrs are coming off a 63-49 defeat at Easton last week and Roeder knows this is a massive test for his squad at Zephyr Stadium.

"We're really excited for the opportunity to play against a team like Whitehall and to play for first place in the conference," he said. "We really have to be solid in all three aspects of the game this week. Easton's a good football team and they did some nice things to Whitehall, but we know we have to play better.

"We've shown what we're capable of doing this year when we play well and then we've had some weeks where we haven't been as sharp. I think all our guys will be ready for this one."

Liberty

Liberty (3-3) dropped a 31-10 result to Parkland last week, as the Trojans bounced back from their first loss last week.

The Hurricanes trailed 17-10 at halftime, but saw Parkland score two second half touchdowns to pull away.

Liberty was hampered by four turnovers on the night, including three interceptions from quarterback Doug Erney, who went 12-of-25 for 143 yards and a touchdown.

The Hurricanes only managed seven first downs and were stifled on the ground, as they had just 14 rushing yards.

Parkland's ground game kept them going, as the Trojans reeled off 312 yards, led by Nolan Ridgway's 175 yards and one touchdown effort.

Trojan quarterback Devante Cross added 69 yards on the ground and two touchdowns to go along with his 116 yards through the air and another score.

Liberty moves on to play Northampton (1-5) this week in a contest that should get them above the .500 mark.
