Maff wins 2A golf title

Bethlehem Catholic's Nick Maff grabbed attention across the Lehigh Valley golf scene when he won a district championship two years ago as a freshman.

That's when the district tournament played 27 holes instead of the current 18-hole format. That's also when Becahi was slated in Class AAA competition.

But while the number of holes changed, and Becahi dropped to AA, Maff's performance didn't alter much from two years ago. In fact, it was on the same greens of Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort that Maff was able to capture his second district title with a 2-over par 74 on Monday afternoon.

"Freshman year, I shot four-under [par]," Maff said, who finished with a 104 on 27 holes two years ago. "I knew that would have been a tough task to do again. Of course I wanted to win, but I wanted to take it one shot at a time, and shoot as low as I could."

After winning as a freshman, Maff took fourth last season in Class AAA competition with a score of 77. He improved that finish by three strokes, and a large part of that was due to his consistent play across the round.

"It felt good because I really struck the ball well," Maff said. "I missed a lot of putts and left a lot of strokes out there, but I'm glad I grinded it out.

"I really just kept the ball in play. I didn't make a lot of big mistakes, and when I did make a mistake, I didn't compound it. I just got the ball back in play."

Maff-who will advance to regional play shot a 1-under par on the first 11 holes.

Becahi's J.T. Barker finished right behind Maff in Class AA competition with a 4-over par 76. He is one of four individual golfers from AA boys that advanced to regionals.

In Class AAA competition, Freedom's Zach Juhasz shot a 1-over par 73 to position himself among the top of the pack once the scores trickled in. Unfortunately, Northampton's Carter Test shot a 73 as well to force a playoff hole to determine the first-place finisher.

And after the two double-bogeyed on the first playoff hole, Test edged out Juhasz for the championship on the next green. Juhasz finished second and is one of six Class AAA boys to advance onto regionals.

"Coming in, I tried to go as low as I could because it's my last year, and I was just trying to win it," Juhasz said. "It was a hard course today. The wind played a big factor, but it was a lot of fun."

Juhasz finished with two birdies, 13 pars and three bogeys.

Freedom's Helen Hsu earned a second-consecutive second-place finish at districts with a round of 78, the best score she has shot at Shawnee. Last year, she came up short to Emmaus' Kelsey Patterson. This year, it was a different Hornet-AAA champion Sam Fritzinger, who shot a 75.

For Hsu, her main focus was to keep her golf season alive by finishing as one of the top three girls in AAA competition, and advancing to regionals once again.

"I just wanted to play well," Hsu said. "I shot a 39 and a 39, so I think that was pretty stable. I topped three balls and got nervous for a little bit, but then I was all right."

Hsu finished with one birdie on the day.

Central Catholic's Franca Hurtado earned first in AA girls competition with an 84. Emmaus won the AAA team championships with a score of 315, while Moravian Academy's total of 323 was 48 strokes better than Mahanoy Area for first in AA.

Freedom's John Yocum (82), Liberty's Vinny Marfisi (82), Liberty's Jacob Siegfried (87), Liberty's Morgan Krause (104) and Bethlehem Catholic's Alexa Bartos (120) rounded out the area's finishers.
