LHS girls get thrilling win

Liberty's girls soccer team won in dramatic fashion over Freedom in the first game of a girl-boy doubleheader last week when Olivia Askernese scored the game-winning goal with 48 seconds left in regulation to pull out the 2-1 Hurricane victory.

Cailey Sanchez was credited with the assist after getting the ball on the 40 yard line and kicking it through two Freedom defenders.

Sanchez said, "We were so excited. We knew we had it then."

The Hurricanes did not want to repeat last year's overtime game when the Patriots scored and won within seconds.

"From that experience, we knew we couldn't put our heads down. We still had to bring it to them tonight," said Sanchez.

Liberty's boys also defeated Freedom, 3-0. The game ended with 6:35 left in regulation, however, due to lightning.

Sammy Abiles, who scored one goal and had two assists, said, "It was a great feeling because of the rivalry."

Teammate Chase Tackett agreed.

"We knew going out that we were going to put a couple of goals away. Freedom's our biggest rival, and it was a good feeling in front of a big crowd," said Tackett.

The following day, the Hurricane boys took on Easton, losing 1-0.

Tackett said, "We took them lightly today."

Earlier in the season, Liberty defeated Easton, 5-2.

"Our intensity wasn't strong enough. It was just one of our down days," said Tackett.

With 45 seconds left in regulation, Marcus Gichiengo appeared to have scored a goal, but a handball was called. Two more attempts were made to score by Colin McIntyre and Tackett.

"We were unlucky, and we need to win out the rest of the week," Tackett said.
