Freedom High School's number one singles player, Flannery Johnston, and Liberty High School's number two singles player, Madelyn Conrad, made it to the quarterfinal round in the District XI Girls Singles Tennis Tournament last week at Saucon Valley High School.
Conrad began the tournament with a win over Pocono Mountain West's Jolanta Dzimira, 6-0, 6-0, and a second win over Parkland's Shelby Knafo, 6-4, 6-4.
"I had more confidence in the second set [against Shelby Knafo] because I won the first set. I came up to the net more. I was trying to be more aggressive because she basically got everything back to me," Conrad said.
In Conrad's quarterfinal match, the Liberty junior lost to number one seeded, Nina DeLuna from Southern Lehigh, 6-0, 6-0.
"She was really consistent and has a nice serve when she gets it in," said Conrad.
Conrad will move on to the District XI Girls Doubles Tennis Tournament with teammate Samantha Peterson.
"We play well together. We're good friends. Last year we made it to the top eight. We've been taking doubles lessons together. Hopefully, we'll do pretty well," Conrad said.
Johnston, a Freedom High senior, defeated Stroudsburg's Sophia Restock, 6-0, 6-0 in the first round, and Easton's Cynthia Blay, 6-2, 6-1 in the second round.
In the quarterfinal, Johnston lost to Northampton's Emma Angle, 6-2, 7-6 (7-4).
