Hawks, 'Canes set for EPC tourney
The final week of the volleyball season is upon us, but the inaugural East Penn Conference volleyball tournament will kick off this Saturday.
Bethlehem Catholic and Liberty both have clinched league tournament berths heading into this week, as Becahi (13-1) should grab the second-seed in the tournament.
Liberty's (11-4) position in the EPC tournament is still up in the air, as the Hurricanes entered this week as the fourthseed after Becahi's three-game sweep over Liberty on Monday night.
Hawks head coach Paul Abi-Daher is hoping to finish this week strong heading into the start of the weekend tournament.
"We're welcoming the competition the EPC tournament can bring us," said Abi-Daher. "That's how I look at it. We want to finish strong this week and use this as a spring board for the league playoffs. We look forward to the league playoffs, because we won't see any of those teams in the district tournament, so it's really a launching pad for us."
Becahi finishes this week off with Easton and Allen, two matches they should come away with comfortable victories, which is something that has been a common theme for the Hawks this season.
Abi-Daher's team has rarely been tested this season, as only Central Catholic and Liberty have taken games from them this season, as the Hawks have swept every other opponent.
That has helped Becahi to their current mark, but Abi-Daher also wishes their was more competitive balance in the new EPC.
"I mean you look at a team like Central Catholic, who may not even make the league playoffs because they're in such a tough division," he said. "In most of our matches, teams are only able to score 15 points a game against us, so we're winning comfortably. I think we should just play everyone once in the league to make the schedule weighted. It's one of the reasons we're looking forward to the EPC tournament, because we want to play some more competition."
The EPC semifinals are slated for October 14 and the finals on October 16.
Freedom (7-8) swept Allen on Monday night to inch themselves closer to a district berth, as the Patriots will need to beat Liberty tonight to qualify for districts.
