David P. Hertzog

David P. Hertzog, 56, of Mertztown, died Oct. 1, 2014, at Lehigh Valley Hospital, Cedar Crest. He was the husband of Donna M. (Schaeffer) Hertzog. Born in Allentown, he was a son of Shirley (Smith) Hertzog and the late Earl Hertzog.

He was a business teacher at Reading High School for the past 35 years, where he was currently the department head.

He was a member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ, Trexlertown, where he was a deacon and a member of the church council.

He graduated from Emmaus High School and received both his bachelor's and master's degrees from Shippensburg University.

He was a legion, junior legion and high school baseball umpire for the past 35 years. He was also the junior varsity head coach and varsity assistant coach for baseball at Reading High School when the team won the state championship. He was a basketball, baseball and softball coach for 10 years in Topton and the Longswamp area.

He received a "Teacher of the Year" award from Junior Achievement.

He is survived by his wife; mother; children, Lauren, Michael and Haley; brother, Jim. He was predeceased by a sister, Ann.
