Becahi wins despite issues on defense

Bethlehem Catholic defeated East Stroudsburg North 41-24 last week, but that doesn't mean everything is bliss in Golden Hawk land.

The Hawks improved to 6-0 on the season, but their defense continues to be an area of concern after giving up 362 yards on the ground last week to a 2-4 ESN team.

Head coach Joe Henrich sees the struggles first hand and hopes his team can get back to playing fundamental football on the defensive side.

"I wasn't thrilled with how we played," said Henrich of last week's win. "I thought we were sloppy. We executed well offensively, but had problems with our defensive responsibilities. We've had two starting linebackers out with injuries, which plays a role in our struggles on defense, but when you rely on your offense so much, you need the defensive side of the ball top get better."

Elijah McBride and Thomas Melchion each ran for 128 yards apiece last week against the Hawks in the surprising rushing effort ESN was able to sustain off the Hawks, considering that they only completed one of five passes through the air last week.

Hawks' quarterback Julian Spigner was consistent and effective as usual, going 15-of-23 for 242 yards and three touchdowns. Michael McDaniel added 96 yards on the ground and two scores to give Becahi balance, but having ESN essentially run the ball down the Hawks' throat 53 times last week, the cause for concern is evident.

The Hawks travel to Pocono Mountain East (1-5) this Friday, but have a looming matchup with Stroudsburg (6-0) the following week.

Keeping his team focused on the task at hand, is the biggest obstacle for Henrich this week.

"We are constantly talking about the here and now," he said. "I'm not sure if the kids always get their mindsets in the right mental state. Sometimes they think how they want and that can get you into trouble. I think that's played some part in our season."
