Trojans look to move forward

Earlier in the week, leading up to his team's anticipated rivalry showdown with Whitehall, head coach Jim Morgans stressed the "other guys" that the Zephyrs have. With all of the hype, and so deserved, going to senior tailback and Penn State recruit Saquon Barkley, Morgans noted that his defense would not focus solely on him, but will need to be on its toes for anyone and everyone else.

And, to the dismay of the Trojans, Whitehall showed just how much more they have in taking down unbeaten Parkland (4-1) 38-24 last Friday night at Whitehall High School to remain undefeated at 5-0.

"Their quarterback [Gianni Sinatore] made some plays, [Jake] Buskirk made some plays, and Barkley did what we expected him to do," said Morgans. "They're a really good football team. They won the game on two big fourth-down conversions. I'm proud of our kids though, they didn't give up."

Sinatore threw for a touchdown and was on the receiving end of one. Buskirk and Chad Rex each added touchdown catches as the Zephyrs showed their athleticism and versatility.

But then Barkley, who was picked as the MVP of the game, had a night of his own. He rushed 28 times for 156 yards and two touchdowns, while throwing for 142 yards and two scores, one to Sinatore for 52 yards and the other to Rex for 90 yards.

Parkland's defense was shocked after giving up big plays and a lot of points. Whitehall outgained the Trojans 284 yards to 95 in the first half. The Trojans entered Friday having allowed just 22 points through their first four games. All of those points came against their second-string defense.

Parkland's offense also could not get going for much of the night. The team rushed for a total of 61 yards, including 46 from quarterback Devante Cross. Cross also threw for 253 yards and three touchdowns, with all of his touchdown passes going to Kenny Yeboah (seven catches, 148 yards) in the second half.

"We fell behind early because we weren't mixing plays," said Morgans. "Once we were down, it was ridiculous to keep running. Our only chance of winning was throwing the ball. Our plan was to get within 14 and then start mixing in the run again, but that didn't happen."
