PHS golfers take second at EPC golf tournament

There was an opportunity for the Parkland golf team to win back-to-back league tournament championships in the first season of the newly formed Eastern Pennsylvania Conference.

The Trojans were also in the hunt for the regular season title, as Parkland, Emmaus and Easton finished in a tie atop the standings. In addition to competing for the tournament, those three squads also fought for the regular season crown.

In the end, the Trojans (11-1 in EPC) were snake-bitten by the team responsible for their only regular season loss-Emmaus. The Hornets won both the regular season title (with the best five scores out of eight golfers) and the league tournament title (best four scores out of five golfers) last Tuesday at Woodstone Country Club.

"Emmaus' team shot very consistently to win the championship," Parkland head coach Scott Levan said. "If we would have had this meet somewhere else, it would've took another day to do it. We figured that since everybody is there, all we had to do is add three kids to each team. We did it that way, and I think it was fair for everybody."

But while the Trojans came up short on both titles, the team performed extremely well with a roster that lost much from 2013, including last season's champ Chad Hess.

"I think this year we lived up great to expectations, considering that really nobody with playing experience was coming back," Levan said. "Bryan [Cummings] had a little bit of it last year, and Greg [Zahour] had a little bit. So we needed other people to step up, and they really did."

"Out of our top eight, probably about three or four of us have had very limited match experience," Cummings said.

Cummings, a senior, led the Trojans with a seven-over par 79, good enough for a fourth-place finish in the tournament. He was one of four golfers that finished with a 79.

Bethlehem Catholic's Nick Maff finished first with a 77, and Pocono Mountain East's Ryan O'Malley shot a 78 on the day.

"He [Cummings] did a great job," Levan said. "It came right down to the end. He just had an unfortunate 18th hole, and he dropped two strokes there. He would've been there at a 77, which was No. 1."

"I'm happy that I was able to par out on 18, but I know I fell apart a little bit on the back nine," Cummings said. "It was a little disappointing to see myself not keeping up throughout the round."

Junior Nick Kshatri (83), senior Greg Zahour (87), sophomore Alec Cwienkala (90) and senior Becca Davis (92) rounded out the Trojans' top five scores.

While Cummings has been one of the top golfers throughout the regular season, he was more focused on helping his Trojans capture another league title more than an individual championship.

Several Parkland golfers went on to compete in Monday's District 11 qualifying tournament. Nick Kshatri shot an 81 in that event, held at Mahoning Valley Country Club. He was the only Parkland golfer to finish in the top 20 and earn a spot at next week's district championship tournament at Shawnee.

Parkland's Alec Cwienkala shot an 87 at the qualifier, missing the cut by two strokes. Cummings and teammate Ryan Horvath shot 90, while Gregg Zahour carded a 94 and Tanner White had 99.

Parkland's Becca Davis and Faye Ko will also move on to the girls district championship based on their season averages below 100. Davis avergaed 80 this season while Ko averaged 94.
