Hanover to close Lloyd St. to make way for shopping center

Hanover Township Board of Supervisors plan to close Lloyd Street to potentially make way for a new shopping center at American Parkway and Airport Road in the township.

The supervisors at the Sept. 17 meeting unanimously agreed closing Lloyd Street, a cut-through between Airport Road and Irving Street, would not cause additional traffic and road issues in the township.

Bethlehem Attorney Lisa Pereira and developer Rick Albertson presented the preliminary sketch plans to the supervisors at the meeting.

Albertson previously developed the Airport Center.

The 20 acre development will include nine buildings which will include one major anchor store, junior anchor stores and smaller retail outlets.

"This is currently a sketch plan of what we're proposing," Pereira said.

Supervisor Bruce Paulus inquired the reasons for closing Lloyd Street.

"It really was going to serve very little purpose," Albertson said.

Township Solicitor Jackson Eaton recommended the board of supervisors review the sketch plans with its Engineer Frederick Hay.

"I don't think your losing anything. It's basically a short cut to Airport Road," Hay told the board. "I don't see a problem with vacating it [Lloyd Street]."

Vice Chariman Robert Heimbecker asked if additional parking will be required.

"The amount of parking we have here is above and beyond what we need," Pereira said.

Albertson also assured the board additional square footage will not be needed for parking.

Pereira will next petition the township to pass a resolution closing Lloyd Street. A vote on the resolution will be taken at a future meeting.

"We're glad you enjoy our municipality and you keep doing business with us," Paulus said.

In other business, Heimbecker recommended the supervisors set up a $1,000 reward fund to assist in the capture of Eric Matthew Frien who is charged with killing Pennsylvania State Trooper Cpl. Bryon Dickson and critically wounding Trooper Alex Douglass.

"We need to get this guy off the streets," Heimbecker said.

Hanover Township relies on the state police as the township does not have its own police force.

The board unanimously agreed to set up a reward fund subject to review by Eaton.

Also during the meeting, the supervisors announced trick or treat in the township will be held 6-8 p.m. Oct. 31. No rain date is scheduled.
