Girls fall to PHS and EHS
The Whitehall field hockey team got a dose of some Skyline snipers during last week's divisional match-ups.
One of those sharpshooters was Emmaus' Meredith Sholder whose hat trick doomed the Zephs at the Hornet's nest. Sholder's three goals and assist helped keep the Green Hornets perfect in league play, giving them a two game cushion over the Zephs (after Parkland's win against Whitehall) in the Skyline division of the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference.
The other damage came from a trio of Trojans, Rachel Rizetto, Allie Bianco and Avery Semler who each found the back of the cage in Parkland's 3-1 victory.
That loss, coupled with Thursday's loss to Emmaus, drops their record to 8-3-1.
Head coach Emily Repsher said that the Emmaus was explosive from the opening whistle.
"They definitely came out hard," said Repsher.
She said that the Green Hornets were able to capitalize on their mistakes. That was evident inside the circle as they surrendered those three first-half scores, the most they've given up in one period since their loss to Moravian Academy.
It was a different story in the second half as the Zephs tightened up defensively. They played much better as a unit, allowing just the one goal to the perennial state championship contenders.
"In the second half we came out stronger," said Repsher. "We addressed some of our issues."
She said the game allowed them to see what needs to be done inside their own end. They will work on correcting those mistakes for the upcoming rematch.
"The next time we see them we want to play a sound game defensively and see what the outcome will be," said Repsher.
As for the game against the Trojans, Repsher said they had trouble getting into any kind of offensive rhythm. They were without both Kourtney and Kylee Cunningham and that disrupted their chemistry (along with the other two-way players), hampering the flow of their offense.
"We just weren't able to connect up the field," said Repsher.
Parkland also started off strong, tallying a goal in the first period, and then tacking on two more in the final frame.
Whitehall's goal came off the stick of Tianna Rivers, while Kayla Nailor made 12 saves for the Zephs.
Repsher said right now the team is focused on getting back together at practice where they can become a cohesive unit again. She said they have to learn from those games and put them in the past.
"We got to find a way to rise above," said Repsher.
