Girls fall to Central
The Whitehall volleyball team looked to get off the schneid when they hosted Allentown Central Catholic in a rematch on Monday night.
After being swept by Emmaus and Parkland High Schools in their last two matches, the Zephs were hoping to avenge an earlier loss to the Vikettes and get back into the win column.
However, the Vikettes had other ideas and defeated the Zephs in three sets, 25-15, 25-17 and 25-19. It marks the third consecutive loss for the Zephyrs and drops their record to 6-6 (5-6 in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference).
The Zephs were more competitive in the rematch, trimming the Vikettes average margin of victory from 11 to 8 over the three games.
The Zephs played well enough to win, especially in the final set, twice cutting the deficit to three late in the game. Still, head coach Laura Hausman sees room for improvement.
"We take ourselves out of a lot of games," said Hausman. "But we're making progress. It may not show in the wins and losses, but as a team we're trying to work on the things we need to work on."
She said if they continue to work on those things, they'll eventually beat the teams that they have struggled against in the past.
The inability to practice has also hampered their growth, said Hausman. With games piling up, they haven't had much of a chance to correct some of their mistakes in practice. As a new coach who's molding a young team, that time is extremely beneficial.
"It would definitely help," she said.
Hausman said they also made some tactical adjustments, switching from the 5-1 which they recently installed, to a 6-2 (this alignment puts two setters on the floor, taking advantage of multiple setters who are also good attackers). She explained it's a slight adjustment since both setters still remain on the floor at all times.
She said they're adjusting well to their everyday line-up and working hard. They'll get more comfortable as time passes.
"We just need more time in the gym, quite frankly," she said.
The Vikettes were powered by the play of Darcy Wolf who had 16 kills, 16 digs and five aces. Wolf could deliver a kill from the back row as well as the front.
Whitehall got snuffed at the net a number of times, hitting the ball into Vikette blockers. Hausman said that the remedy to that outcome is just being aggressive.
"You can't worry about a block; it's all about changing their mentality," said Hausman.
She said they can't worry about what's on the other side of the net and just do their jobs.
"If you swing at a ball the way you swing at it in practice, there won't be a problem," Hausman said.
In that final game, the Zephs crept back late as Emily Castro drew them within three with a kill at 18-21. However, the Vikettes pulled away from that point to secure the win. That game was also highlighted by some big blocks from Cristal Fernandez and some sprawling digs from Tanesia Rehrig and Korin Kohler.
