Borough public works crews to wear pink

Northampton Borough's public works employees certainly are getting second looks from residents and motorists this month.

At a September meeting, it was announced the crew members will put away their lime green and orange T-shirts and replace them with pink ones.

The administration and council has approved a request from Greg Morey, public works supervisor, for the men to wear the pink shirts in recognition and support for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Whatever color they're wearing, public works personnel also are preparing Laubach Avenue, Main Street to 14th Street, for repaving.

"We cannot pave beyond 14th Street until UGI gets done replacing the old gas main that currently serves the school, community center and some homes," borough Manager Gene Zarayko said.

A section of Howertown Road, south of Fourth Street, was repaved by borough crews. Council reported the section of road was badly deteriorated.

Public works personnel just completed repaving a section of 29th Street, which also was in a state of disrepair.

Council also recently adopted a resolution granting permission to set the borough's contribution rate at 3 percent to the nonuniformed defined contribution pension plan for 2015

Borough lawmakers approved a second resolution setting the police contribution rate at 8 percent of their gross yearly earnings The borough will contribute an extra $29,761, a slight increase from last year.
