Liberty knocks of Pates

In their final tennis match of the regular season, Liberty defeated Freedom, 6-1 last week.

Emily Moss, the number three singles player for the Hurricanes, ended the regular season undefeated with a 7-5, 1-6, 6-4 victory over Kaitlyn Swint.

"I was nervous all day. Usually, my matches go really long, but it was a lot longer today. I'm sad it's over, but I'm glad that I finished my best my senior year," Moss said.

At number one singles, Freedom's Flannery Johnston defeated Samantha Peterson, 6-3, 6-4, and at number two singles, Liberty's Madelyn Conrad defeated Elizabeth McCarthy, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.

Later in the day, Peterson and Conrad teamed up to defeat Johnston and McCarthy, 8-4, at number one doubles. At number two doubles, Liberty's Katie Kametz and Briana Canady defeated Madison McTier and Shannon Callaghan, 6-0, 6-3.

Kametz said, "We had a lot of confidence because we lost to them [in the EPC tournament], and we wanted to make a comeback. A 30-40 game started to stress us out a little, but we won, and I hit an ace on one of my serves."

This season was the first time Kametz and Canady played as a doubles pair.

"We had a lot more communication [today], and we focused on the ball more. I hit a hard volley. I was surprised it went over, but they weren't able to get it," Canady said.

At number three doubles, Liberty's Sarah Manley and Jackie Arthur defeated Rachel Loh and Gabriella Greenhoward, 7-6, 6-3.

Greenhoward said, "They've been ranked high during the season, but we looked forward to playing them. I was hitting a lot of net shots, and Rachel was able to get behind the baseline for deeper balls."

This season was also a first time for Greenhoward and Loh as a doubles pair.

"From the beginning of the season, we've really progressed in the right direction, and I'm proud of what we've come to be," said Loh. At number four doubles, Liberty's Martina Gale and Maris DeLuca defeated Alexa Diaz and Sarrah Hussain, 6-4, 6-4.

Corrections

Last week's Bethlehem Press tennis coverage incorrectly spelled Freedom player Kaitlin Swint's name. The Press regrets the error.
