'Canes win 3
Liberty High School's girls soccer team is on a three game winning streak, having defeated East Stroudsburg North, 6-1, Bethlehem Catholic, 3-1, and most recently, Allen, 8-0.
Liberty's first goal against Allen was scored by Taysia Snead, assisted by Hannah Greer. Olivia Askernese followed up with back-to-back goals, the first on an assist by Taysia Snead, and the second on an assist by Ally Lynott.
In the second half, Erika Peters scored back-to-back goals, the first off a direct free kick, and the second on an assist by Cailey Sanchez. Sanchez then scored on an assist by Hannah Greer.
Greer was credited with a second assist when the Hurricanes' seventh goal was scored by Snead. Liberty's last goal was scored by Payton Shaffer, assisted by Theresa Cazarrubias.
The Hurricanes had 24 shots on goal and 11 corner kicks. Allen's goalie, Joelyz Reyes, made 16 saves, and Liberty's goalie, Jessica Becker, made one save.
One of the Hurricanes' most looked forward to games was that against Becahi last week.
Sanchez said, "That was our most intense game. We played hard and had possession almost the whole game. The hardest thing about the Beca game was having to run to the ball, driving through the girls. The biggest things were getting to the ball and our attitudes."
For the past two years, the Hurricanes had been shut out by the Hawks.
Peters said, "We hit the post a couple times, and then it was three in a row. Bang, bang, bang in the first period. The energy was so high."
Peters cited the Hurricanes' 4-1 loss to Parkland as another well-played game.
"That was our best played, and the game against Beca. We did not want to get killed," said Peters.
Sanchez attributes the Hurricanes' turnaround to the fact that a lot of the team has been playing together for three years. Peters believes the Hurricanes got angry and just did not want to lose anymore.
This week, Liberty will have faced archrival Freedom on Tuesday, past Press deadlines.
"We have to keep our heart in the game. Our drive has to be there. We can't score, and then it's done. There's 80 minutes no matter what," said Sanchez.
