LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

'Canes, Hawks in the driver seat

Liberty's volleyball team has been hot over the past three weeks, as the Hurricanes have won seven out of their last eight meetings heading into last night's tilt with Freedom, which was past Press deadlines.

The 'Canes (8-3) lone loss recently came in a 3-1 defeat to Bethlehem Catholic (10-1) last week, as they prepare to clinch a spot in districts this week.

A victory over Freedom (5-6) last night would have clinched a district berth for Liberty, which is right where head coach Missy Lynn hoped her team would be heading into this campaign.

"We will definitely make the playoffs this year," said Lynn. "We were one match out last year. But our goal is not to just make the playoffs, our goal is to win matches once we're there."

Bethlehem Catholic has already clinched a district berth, as the Golden Hawks are currently the top team in the District 11 2A power points. Becahi shouldn't get much of a push back through their final regular season games, as they close out this week with Allen and Freedom.

The Hawks take on Liberty, Easton and Allen again next week, as they look to push Parkland to the brink for the top spot in the East Penn Conference.

Lynn, however, is focused on what her team needs to do to keep the positive momentum going.

Liberty takes on Easton tonight, before closing out next week with Dieruff, Becahi and Freedom.

"I think we've been having a pretty good season so far," she said. "We lost to Becahi last week, but our passing and defense keep us in every match. Our confidence is growing, and as long as we stay focused and disciplined, and win the matches we should, we should finish top six or seven in 3A."

Freedom earned a must-needed victory over Easton in five games last night to keep their playoff hopes alive with five matches left. As mentioned, they took on Liberty last night and have Dieruff this week as well, before finishing out the schedule against Becahi, Allen and Liberty next week.
