Football team looks to bring it all together

Catasauqua head football coach Phil Dorn believes his team is always ready to put its offense all together.

Through the first four weeks of the season, the Roughies have been saddled with their offense being half empty or half full. Take your pick.

It can be a pivotal reason for the team's 1-3 start, one in which Dorn is convinced his team isn't as bad as their paper record might indicate.

"There have been games where we have been running the ball well and we can't get our passing game going," he said. "In other games, it is just the opposite. (Against Saucon Valley), I thought we did a good job running the ball, but we couldn't get our passing game going like we had the previous week."

In their recent showing against undefeated Saucon Valley (4-0), the Roughies quickly fell behind 20-0 at the end of the first quarter, and then found themselves in a 35-7 hole at the half.

Cristian Burker connected with Jake Kober on a 45-yard scoring strike and Brandon Keks hit Miguel Hernandez on a 26-yard touchdown to account for the offensive output for the Roughies. Devon Mitchell added a 20-yard fumble return for the other score that was the result of a 49-19 defeat.

"I thought we ran the ball well, but we couldn't get our total passing game together," said Dorn. "But they (Saucon Valley) are a very talented football team. They have a great running back and their quarterback can run and throw the ball. We were able to put pressure on him (quarterback) at times, but we weren't able to get to him.

"We did some good things, but we didn't do enough in all areas. We knew this would be a very tough assignment, but we didn't quit even when we were down by a big number at halftime. But we keep making progress."

Up next for the Roughies is a winless Wilson squad (0-4), who will play host to Catty Saturday afternoon. Wilson is coming off a hard -fought 20-15 loss to Northern Lehigh last weekend and suffered a 40-20 defeat to Southern Lehigh two weeks earlier.

Wilson is averaging a little over 11 points and is giving up just over 30 points per game.
