Kaitlin Schwent, Freedom High School's number three singles player, took third place in the East Penn Conference Girls Tennis Tournament on Saturday at Parkland High School.
Schwent defeated East Stroudsburg South, 10-4, in the consolation match for the bronze medal.
"I felt relieved. I was tired. My coach [Mark Sigmon] gave me good advice. He told me to keep the ball in play and keep playing aggressively. Yes, it worked up at the net most of the time. That's how I dominated the game," Schwent said.
Schwent came into the consolation match after losing to Liberty High School's Emily Moss, 5-10.
"When I played her, I wasn't expecting that score. She was great, consistent at hitting the ball. She was really nice, one of the nicest players. Being our rival school, I was trying my best," said Schwent.
Schwent won in a tiebreaker (score unavailable) against Nazareth in the quarterfinal.
"I was down 3-7 and got back into it. I played deep to the backhand like my coach said," Schwent said.
Last year, Schwent won third place at three doubles in the Lehigh Valley Conference Tennis Championships.
"Singles is really different. It's more individual. I like singles better than doubles," she said. "My strokes were really good today. The day was very challenging."
